When I was in Utah this summer I took some of Phil's parents pictures (they were on a mission) and decided to make them digital pictures and scrapbook them. I grabbed 2 boxes of pictures that had a sleeve for each of their children. I didn't think it would be a big deal until I had them all scanned in and there were over 300 pictures. Wow! I started editing them and getting them printed and scrappin' them. It was quite the process. I thought since I was getting gifts for everyone why not make each sibling their own book with their childhood pictures in it. I made these couple gifts, cause Phil wasn't to happy about the whole present giving idea I had. It was so fun to see the finished products. Phil's parents book was quite large, it was good we didn't need to ship it. So I ended up making 8 scrapbooks.
Every year I make quilts/blankets for the new babies first Christmas. I started this when I first came into the family. There was only one nephew born before I 'joined' the fam so he is the only one without a blanket. Every year I try a new kind of blanket and this year I have loved the minky fabric so I decided to use that with the satin binding. There were 3 babies born this year, 2 boys and a girl.
We also gave Iowa shirts to older nephews, fun church CD and book to older niece, a game to brothers, Nerf gun to a 6 year old nephew, and some aprons and baking stuff to sisters. I included pictures by request, so don't look too close at my handiwork.
This was such a fun Christmas for me. I was able to think about each of our family members and come up with my idea of what they might like. I still have my list for the in laws that got clumped with their spouses in getting the scrapbooks so maybe I will have to do this again next year, hmmm, don't tell Phil.
So the 'art' of gift giving. I think it is fun to give but there are certain limits you must and should have. Not too expensive of a gift to someone who isn't expecting anything, and on the flip side don't waste your money if it is crap, nothing too dangerous to kids, it is ok to give loud annoying gifts to others because they have the option of throwing it out, you get the idea.
So what do you think about the gift we were given. Not McKell, not Nate, not even the stroller-- yep the dog! My father, only my father would give someone a dog. The girls are in heaven as you can imagine, they have asked for a dog multiple times a day for the last year. Once Phil saw the girls with Teek (an ewok name from Star Wars) it was suddenly ok with him for them to have a dog.
At least it is a little shih tzu which are good dogs and very cute. (Thanks dad they LOVE it.) So again the 'art' of gift giving- no giving pets to other peoples children unless you have their permission. Which makes me wonder why I ever gave my boyfriend in high school a rabbit for Easter one year. WHAT???

let us see the doggie!
Great post Nicole. I completely agree. That is one of my favorite things about Christmas, thinking of just the right thing for the people in my life that I care so much about. Really, if they are a part of my life they've shaped my life in some way. I love thinking of something for them.
Well said Nicole.
Wow. That is hilarious. He looks so cute though! Love all the gifts you gave everyone. How nice of you. Especially since noone else was exchanging gifts. Go Nicole! I have no idea where you find the time or energy...
Oh so cute. I have been dying to see what the dog looks like. Wish we still lived close so my girlies could come play, they have been begging for a dog actually just an animal of any sort.
Look at your girls, growing up!!!!
I love the quilts!! They're beautiful... You're amazing!!
You make us un-crafty people look terrible! You've got such great ideas. I need your help to think of things next year!
Hey, we got a dog too! I keep telling Tyler that I must have been in a REALLY good mood that day to say yes.
You are so talented! A dog; I hope your Dad asked you and Phil before he bought it. I would have given it right back. I know I am terrible, but no dogs for me. To much work.
SO... when are we making these blankies for our BABIES???
SO cute. I really wish I could have seen the scrapbooks.
You are amazing!
What a fun Christmas! I am like you, I love making gifts for people. It is a lot of work, but the ending result is awesome! The quilts turned out really cute!
Do. Not. Tell. My. Kids! (about the dog!) How did you get it home? I know you drove, but that's a long drive and dogs have to go to the bathroom & they bark...not to mention jumping & running all over (Can you tell I'm not a fan of dogs/pets?) I hope you had a carrier of something for it in the car!
So, is that a brand new dog or did your dad give you their dog?
I didn't quite understand - did your dad ASK you BEFORE if it was OK? Or just do it?
Haylee just got Littlest Pet Shop stuff to replace the "real" things - we'll see if she's mature enough to care for fake pets before we move on to real!
Thanks again for Brookelle's blanket - I tortured her the other day by taking 100 photos of her peeking out from under it - I kept putting it on top of her head (draped down her back) and she kept pulling it off & trying to get away! I'll have to blog them for ya!
Holy cow, you have been busy! Can you do my shopping next year if I give you names, ages, etc??? hee, hee
A dog??? Wow, Merry Christmas to the Brenchley Family!
The dog was boughten for us with my dad knowing we didn't want a dog till we were done with residency and in a 'normal' life. So no permission was given at all, actually the opposite of permission was given, everyone had been told- no way! The ride home was actually ok. He has a little carrier that he rode in most of the time. He also sleeps in it at night. And he doesn't bark, not yet anyway. He is a puppy, a few months old.
i was just wondering what you guys decided to do about the dog, now i know! what cool parents (or suckers!) j/k i just saw marley and me, totally cried, and it made me want to have another dog.
we love the blanket, it's so soft and warm (it got down to 65 the other night):). thank you so much. i can't believe all that you did! you're an amazing woman! it was fun getting to know you better, love you guys!
overdoing it again. those blankets are to die for. can't wait for you to help me with one for this little one.
I HAVE to come see the dog he is so cute. My kids could not stop talking about him.
So what happened to leaving the dog with your parents? however I thought we were the only ones who would name something after Star Wars ( you know jim lost 4 times on naming each of our boys Jed I. Knight)
Wow Nicole! You are the most amazing person. I am amazed at your selflessness, thoughtfulness, and creativeness. (is that enough "nesses") My boys love the game by the way and have been playing it on a daily basis with the neighbors. They have to play when Max is awake though because they are so loud- laughing!
Thank you so much for all you did for each of us this Christmas. I am hoping to do something for everyone throughout the next year. We'll see how far I get!
I still cannot believe this.
Wow! You are really talented! I love the blankets!!
